My Son Sanctuary Guide
What My Son is
My Son was the religious heart of the Champa kingdom that ruled central Vietnam for centuries. What survives is a set of red-brick Hindu temple towers, some over a thousand years old, scattered across a green valley. War damage means several are ruined, but the setting and the brickwork are remarkable, and a guide brings the carvings to life.
Go at sunrise
The best decision you can make is to go early. A sunrise tour reaches the ruins before the buses and before the valley heats up. Several include a Champa breakfast or a cultural show, and many return by boat down the Thu Bon rather than retracing the road. Bring sun protection and water, as there is little shade.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to visit My Son?
First thing in the morning. The site opens early, and a sunrise tour means cool air, golden light and a fraction of the crowds that arrive by mid-morning. The valley gets very hot later in the day.
How far is My Son from Hoi An?
About 40 km, or roughly an hour by road. Many tours drive out and return by boat down the Thu Bon River, which breaks up the journey and adds a scenic finish.
