Step 1: start early

The biggest mistake is ordering on your last day. Begin within your first day or two so there is time for two fittings. A rushed, same-day suit is the one that disappoints.

Step 2: choose the shop and fabric

Pick a tailor with consistent reviews, then spend time on the fabric. Feel the cloth, ask what it is, and choose wool or a wool blend for a proper suit. Get a written quote that spells out the fabric, the lining and how many fittings are included.

Step 3: the fittings

Expect a measurement, a first fitting where the rough suit is pinned, and a second where the adjustments are checked. Speak up at the fitting, this is when fit problems get fixed. Walk, sit and raise your arms to test it.

Step 4: collect and check

Inspect the finished suit in good light, check the shoulders and the trouser break, and try it on fully before you pay the balance. Read our broader tailors guide and the tailored vs ready-made comparison first.

Look for shops with consistent reviews, ask to see and feel the fabric, get a written quote that lists the cloth and inclusions, and judge by the first fitting rather than the sales pitch.

A wool or wool-blend for a real suit, and confirm exactly what you are paying for, as cheaper quotes often use lighter synthetic blends. The fabric is what separates a good suit from a souvenir.
