The Japanese Covered Bridge
The 400 year old covered bridge is the symbol of Hoi An and the image on the 20,000 VND note. It is free to admire from outside, but crossing it and entering the little temple inside uses a heritage coupon. Go early or late to photograph it without crowds.
Fujian Assembly Hall
The grandest of the Chinese halls, built by the Fujian community and dedicated to Thien Hau, goddess of the sea. The pink triple gate, the courtyards and the coiled incense make it the standout interior in town.
Cantonese and Hainan halls
Smaller but rewarding, the Cantonese hall has fine dragon carvings and the Hainan hall honours a group of murdered merchants. Spread your coupons across two or three halls rather than rushing all five.
Go with a storyteller
The carvings and shrines make far more sense with context. A small-group culture walk from $45 explains the symbolism and the trading history. Our old town guide covers ticket logistics.
Understand what you see
