What My Son is

My Son was the religious heart of the Champa kingdom, which ruled central Vietnam for centuries. What survives is a set of red-brick Hindu temple towers, some over a thousand years old, scattered across a green valley ringed by hills. War damage means several are ruined, but the setting and the craftsmanship of the brickwork are remarkable, and a guide brings the carvings to life.

Go early

The single best decision you can make is to go at sunrise. An early-morning tour from $19 reaches the ruins before the tour buses and before the valley heats up. Several options include a Champa breakfast or a cultural show, and many return by boat down the Thu Bon rather than retracing the road.

Other ways to visit

If you prefer a slower pace, a half-day private guided tour from $55 gives you a dedicated guide and flexible timing. There is also a sunset version from $22 for travelers who would rather sleep in, though afternoons are hotter. Whichever you choose, wear sun protection and bring water, as there is little shade among the towers.

Preguntas Frecuentes

Yes, if you have an interest in history or atmospheric ruins. My Son is a UNESCO listed complex of Cham Hindu temples set in a jungle valley, far quieter and older feeling than the modern attractions, especially early in the morning.

First thing in the morning. The site opens early, and a sunrise tour means cool air, golden light and a fraction of the crowds that arrive by mid-morning. The valley gets very hot later in the day.

About 40 km, or roughly an hour by road. Many tours drive out and then return by boat down the Thu Bon River, which breaks up the journey and adds a scenic finish.
