What it actually is
The basket boat, or thung chai, is a round woven bamboo coracle once used by local fishermen. In the Cam Thanh water coconut forest, drivers paddle visitors among the palms and, on cue, spin the boats in place to whoops and music. It is short, cheerful and unashamedly touristy.
How to do it
You can book a standalone basket boat ride from $5, or a slightly longer forest version from $12. The better value, though, is to take a cooking class that includes the ride, so you get the market, the boat and a meal in one half day. Cam Thanh is a short bike or taxi ride from the old town.
Setting expectations
This is a fun photo stop, not a wildlife cruise. The spinning and the music are part of the fun but can feel staged. Go in, enjoy it for what it is, tip your driver, and move on to the old town or the beach.
